The chapter illustrates cultural schemas and cultural categories that are typically taught in German EFL lessons based on textbook materials. Our analysis reveals that these representations of culture are rather static and (although depicting aspects of diversity) largely fail to encourage critical development and reflection of learner’s own cultural conceptualizations. The results of our study serve as a basis for extended and more flexible mediation of cultural content with the help of virtual and augmented reality. In this context, three exemplary scenarios of a walk-in photo are presented. The contribution also proposes an extended theoretical basis for the analysis of cultural conceptualizations in the form of our own Cultural Positioning System (CPS), which is also brought into line with social psychological approaches, curricular demands, and cultural theory.

摘要
