This shift reflects a broader commitment to environmental stewardship and the pursuit of multi-national strategies to halve global carbon emissions by 2030. The move towards sustainable built environments marks a substantial step in achieving the objectives set by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement, where commitments to take action on climate change have been agreed to by all member countries, including Australia and India. In the distinct yet complementary contexts of Australia and India, it is important to consider how sustainable built environments can be realised through the complex interplay of factors demonstrated by the two nations. Australia and India, although different in their socioeconomic realities, share a commitment to sustainability that provides valuable insights for other nations. This chapter outlines the various factors that shape sustainable built environments, such as geography, climate, cultural heritage, and policy frameworks, within the contexts of Australia and India. By exploring these factors, the chapter provides a foundation for understanding the complexities involved in advancing sustainability. Special attention is given to the roles of stakeholders—including educators, policymakers, industry professionals, and communities—and how their contributions influence the pursuit of sustainable development goals.
