Climate-Smart Rice Production Technologies for Improving Productivity and Resilience

Rice is a vital commodity in South Asian countries, where resource-poor farmers mostly rely on it for their sustenance, nutrition, and livelihood. Injudicious use of agricultural inputs along with inappropriate management practices have been vastly impacting the quality of the natural resources and contributing to the climatic variability that not only adversely affects rice productivity, but also poses a significant threat to overall food security. It is very crucial to improve adaptive capacity of farmers and ensure food security while reducing environmental footprints. Rice production systems can be made more profitable and sustainable through the deployment of climate-resilient and resource-efficient technologies such as direct-seeded rice, alternate wetting and drying, laser land leveling, residue management, etc. These improved technologies not only help in addressing the climate risks, but also reduce the environmental footprints with enhanced rice productivity and reduced cost of cultivation, thereby ensuring sustainability of rice-based farming systems and food security as well. Developing and disseminating climate-smart resource-conserving technologies will contribute toward achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals of “Zero Hunger” and “Climate Action” by 2030.
