Climate change is having significant impacts on various aspects of the ecosystem, including agriculture. Rising global temperatures are particularly affecting the cultivation of food crops, which are highly sensitive to variations in temperature, rainfall patterns, as well as extreme weather events. The effect of climate change on food crop cultivation is multifaceted but varies depending on the crop, the region, and the specific climate change scenario. This chapter discusses the impacts of climate change on food crop cultivation, the present consequences of global warming, and some potential adaptation strategies that could be employed to mitigate these impacts. The ongoing effects of global warming on food crop cultivation are already being felt in many parts of the world, with reduced crop yields, lower crop quality, increased pest and disease pressure, increased food insecurity, and changes in food availability being some of the most significant consequences. Adaptation strategies such as crop diversification, improved water management, improved crop management, investment in research along with development, and climate information services can be employed to mitigate these impacts. However, concerted global endeavours to decrease greenhouse gas emissions and control the enhancement in global temperatures will also be necessary to prevent the most severe impacts of climate change on food crop cultivation besides ensuring food security for future generations.
