With China’s rapid economic development, coal has long dominated its energy structure, serving as the primary energy source for industrial production and residential heating. However, coal combustion releases significant amounts of pollutants, particularly polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), posing serious threats to the environment and human health. This study reviews research methodologies on PAHs emissions from coal combustion in China, including field sampling, laboratory combustion experiments, and modeling simulations, establishing a comprehensive emission factors (EFs) framework. It also highlights measures adopted in recent years to mitigate coal-related pollution, such as the application of flue gas purification technologies in industry and the implementation of clean energy policies like “coal-to-electricity” and “coal-to-gas” for residential heating. These efforts have significantly reduced PAHs emissions.
