Kermānshāh handwoven carpets (henceforth Kermānshāh carpets) are exquisite artifacts that witness the region’s natural beauty and cultural background. These magnificent masterpieces, with their unique designs, motifs, and vibrant colors, serve as visual narratives reflecting the interplay between nature and human culture. In this chapter, the author adopts a semio-cultural approach to delve into the symbolic meanings embedded within these works of art. His study begins by situating Kermānshāh carpets within their cultural context, tracing their origins and influences. That is followed by exploring the design elements—patterns, motifs, symbols, and color palettes—that recur across these handicrafts. Based on the findings from cultural semiotics, he elucidates the symbolism in the designs: iconic representations of natural phenomena, signifying references to artistic practices, and symbolic layers of meaning. The narratives encoded in their designs and motifs have been unraveled by describing these notable Kermānshāh pieces. Ultimately, this chapter contributes to the reader’s understanding of how nature and culture intersect on the distinctive web of Kermānshāh carpets.

摘要
