Hydrogen energy is a typical secondary energy source, and the vast majority of hydrogen used by human society requires the consumption of other energy sources to produce. The energy consumption of the hydrogen industry primarily stems from the on-purpose hydrogen production process in the upstream of the industry chain, with a small amount originating from other processes such as hydrogen conversion, storage, delivery, and refueling. This chapter focuses on studying the energy consumption and carbon emissions of the on-purpose hydrogen production process, estimating the carbon emission reduction effect by using hydrogen as a substitute for fossil fuels in end-use sectors, and conducting a comprehensive assessment of the net carbon emission reduction contributions of the hydrogen industry in different time periods.
