Green Building Standards and Certifications

Green building rating systems have existed for nearly three decades and have supported greening the built environment in major cities worldwide. The chapter reflects on the journey of green building standards and certification over the last decades and how mainstreaming green buildings is possible in emerging and developing economies worldwide. The chapter also reflects on India’s journey toward green building standards and certification, the process, and the similarities and dissimilarities between green rating systems. The chapter provides examples of green-certified buildings, their key credits and green features, along with the certification scoresheet. The chapter lastly delves into the contribution of green building standards in mitigating carbon emissions and the direction green building certifications can take to address the challenges of emissions, pollution, and resilience at the city level.
