Stability Aspects of Geosynthetic Reinforced Wall Using Marginal Soils as Reinforced Backfill

Geosynthetic Reinforced Walls have gained popularity all around the world due to its ease of construction, cost effectiveness, ability to restrain the settlements generated and aesthetic value. The economy of the mechanically stabilized earth wall is largely affected by the type of the backfill used. International Standards recommend the use of free draining & granular material as reinforced fill for the construction of the backfill in reinforced walls. At a particular site if such free draining material is not available, transportation & procurement of this soil will be difficult & will also impact the cost of the structure. Many structures proposing reinforced soil wall need to be altered due to non-availability of proper reinforced fill soil. Thus, the objective of this study is to focus on the use of locally available material (marginal soil) for backfill construction. In this paper, the behavior of the lateritic soil, which is categorized as one of the marginal soils, when used as the backfill material along with the geosynthetics is assessed. Pullout Test to understand the behavior between the geosynthetics and lateritic soil is carried out with a variation at normal pressure. The results received are compared with the results generated analytically.
