Ground improvement technique is used to enhance various engineering characteristics of soil. A number of reasons exist as to why ground improvement is the need of the hour in troublesome soils having low shear strength or in loose and soft soils (clay) such as less soil stability, excess settlement, weak load-bearing capacity and less drainage. Various types of methods are currently practised for stabilizing the soil like jet grouting, geosynthetics, basal reinforcement, use of gypsum and also by bitumen. Now-a-days stone column is preferred as an advanced and modern technique to strengthen the bearing capacity as well as to minimise the deformation and settlement of the soil. Embankment consisting of stone columns can be preferred for construction of railways and roads instead of going for old traditional construction methods which usually slower in nature and consume much more time. In this paper, a numerical analysis is performed to analyse the behaviour of the embankment supported by the soft clay soil. In addition to this, stone columns are vertically embedded in the clay layer throughout its depth. Sand layer is placed just below the embankment and supported on the clay layer. Various parameters have been studied and presented to study the behavioural changes between the above said two cases.

摘要
