Role of Photonics in Enhancing Additive Manufacturing Techniques and Process

In the material science development sector, twentieth century seems to be a revolutionary era. With the innovative materials like semiconductors, biomaterials, polymers, etc. have been upgraded for the latest technologies. These achievements and new materials have diversified the applications at industrial levels such as in transportation, health care, electronics, and energy devices. Photonics-based additive manufacturing technology has ushered the process of 3D printing at a low-cost with lesser fabrication steps. It has also reduced the machinery size, material wastage, and is able to create more complex 3D patterns. In this chapter, we will discuss the types of photonics-based additive manufacturing techniques along with their benefits and the limitations. Also, we will relate a few parameters of this latest technology with the traditional techniques to manufacture 3D objects in an effective manner.
