The strategic management of the aviation sector of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) focuses on key areas such as infrastructure expansion, integration with urban mobility networks, technological innovation, and sustainability initiatives in alignment with the international standards set forth by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA). The UAE positions itself as a global aviation hub, home to six international airlines and eight international airports, including the world’s busiest international airport in Dubai (DXB). The UAE’s main airports, such as Dubai International (DXB), Abu Dhabi International (AUH), and Sharjah International (SHJ) play a critical role in achieving the nation’s broader economic and developmental objectives. The long-term vision of the UAE for aviation is outlined in Vision 2021 and Vision 2030. These frameworks focus on enhancing airport capacity, streamlining air traffic management, and adopting advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and biometrics to improve passenger experience and operational efficiency. The authors also discuss the integration of airports with urban mobility networks to facilitate seamless, environmentally friendly, “smart” transportation systems to and from the airports, highlighting key airports infrastructure projects and their expansion. Sustainability is a core focus, as the UAE’s aviation performers invest in “green airport” practices, sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), and carbon emission reduction initiatives in compliance with ICAO’s and ACI’s (Airports Council International) environmental guidelines and procedures. The opportunities and strategic priorities, such as technological advancement, are also analysed while emphasising the UAE’s proactive cybersecurity and safety standards investments. It is concluded that the UAE’s strategic management, grounded on ICAO and GCAA standards, is shaping its aviation sector and positioning the nation as a leader in global aviation.
