Valorization of Jackfruit Waste for Biogas Production
摘要
Waste management has always been challenging due to various obvious reasons in the state of Kerala. Valorization of wastes by converting them into valuable by-products is an effective approach toward sustainable waste management practices. Biogas generation from organic wastes is thus the most economical and feasible solution. Biogas production from locally available waste materials is not only a sustainable option in waste management, but can also significantly reduce waste generation and offer promising opportunities in the energy sector. In the present study, a typically locally available waste material, jackfruit waste, was explored as a substrate for biogas generation. Feasibility of gas production for both raw and ripe jackfruit waste were studied. Optimum environmental conditions such as pH, alkalinity, and VFA were maintained during the experiments. It was observed that jackfruit waste is an effective substrate having a good potential for gas production. Onsite management of locally available waste through their valorization can offer promising solutions for waste reduction as well as energy scarcity especially, in a thickly populated state like Kerala.
