Mencius’s theory of innate goodness enables Confucius’s idea of the unity of benevolence and rites to be rooted in the inherent benevolence of human nature. This establishes an intrinsic foundation for benevolence and, consequently, determines that human virtue is the basis for being human and superior to other species. For human nature is inherently good, political principles should stem from the embodiment of goodness. Therefore, the path of politics is not to be constrained by external rules but rather to be enlightened through nurturing and expanding such goodness.

Mencius’s theory of innate goodness enables Confucius’s idea of the unity of benevolence and rites to be rooted in the inherent benevolence of human nature.
