Seeding the Future: A Review of IoT Applications and Prospects in Next-Gen Agriculture

The ever-increasing global population, especially in the African continent, where the entire world population is projected to reach about 2.5 billion by 2050, comes with the challenge of meeting the rise in the demand for food. Though the arable farmland area remains relatively constant, the need to increase food production through the Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled farming techniques cannot be over-emphasized. This research presented a systematic review of the current status, progress on the application of IoT-enabled farming techniques, its challenges and future. The study discusses the various sensors and protocols that are relevant to IoT systems in livestock tracking and monitoring, crop monitoring, and weather tracking for farm automation. Internet of Food (IoF), smart automated greenhouse farming, and irrigation systems were also presented. Though this farming approach is gaining global popularity, its implementation in developing and underdeveloped countries is still limited due to lack of awareness, deployment cost, and security issues.
