Social Determinants and Cultural Aspects of Geriatric Mental Health in South Asia
摘要
South Asia is a region marked by significant geographic and cultural diversity. With around 7% of the world’s land area, South Asia is home to about 25% of the global population. Political conflicts, poor education levels, poverty, and economic disparities are some of the cultural peculiarities of South Asian countries. The number of older adults in the region has risen, currently totaling around 126 million. South Asian families traditionally respect older adults, involve them in decision making and consider their welfare as the primary family responsibility. But the migration of younger generations due to inadequate employment opportunities in hometowns has weakened family ties, leaving older adults more vulnerable. Along with this loneliness, abuse is another important mental health issue that the older adults are facing in the region. This puts pressure on governments to develop stronger health and social policies for older adults’ welfare. There is paucity of data on mental health of older people from South Asia, except India. The chapter reviews existing literature to shed light on cultural issues impacting on the mental health of older people in the region.
