Geriatric psychiatry is underdeveloped in South Asian countries such as Afghanistan, Bhutan, and the Maldives. This is not surprising, as overall mental health services in these regions face several challenges, including pervasive stigma, low literacy rates, a lack of mental health professionals, a significant treatment gap, and limited research. Among the eight countries in South Asia, research on mental health is particularly lacking in these three nations. In this chapter, we aim to examine the burden of geriatric mental health, the current status of available services, end-of-life care, research, and training in geriatric psychiatry, as well as the legal and ethical issues surrounding geriatric mental health. We will also discuss existing policies and programs, along with the current challenges in geriatric mental health, based on the available evidence.
