The Role of Vaccination in Controlling Swine Zoonosis

In today’s scenario of climate change, pathogens that were previously less virulent have gained increased virulence through mutations. Additionally, pathogens that once infected only specific species and organ system have evolved to infect a number of species and other organ systems, potentially leading to epidemics or pandemics. Pigs, acting as maintenance or amplification hosts for various pathogens, and the widespread pork consumption, along with close human contact, facilitate the cross-species transmission of zoonotic diseases. Lessons from past outbreaks highlight the importance of vaccines for the control and prevention of diseases. So, accelerated development of vaccines, therapeutic antibodies, and antivirals or antibiotics are required to control and treat infections during outbreaks. Vaccinating pigs can stop the disease at the animal level, boosting productivity, increasing farmers’ income, and protecting human health. Various vaccine approaches, including inactivated, live attenuated, subunit vaccines, recombinant and vectored vaccines, DNA and RNA vaccines, peptide-based vaccines, reverse genetics, and virus-like particles, have been used to prevent zoonotic transmission from pigs to humans. This review focuses on different vaccination strategies for countering various swine zoonotic diseases, including swine influenza, Nipah virus, Japanese encephalitis, swine coronavirus, brucellosis, salmonellosis, E. coli, leptospirosis, streptococcosis, erysipelas, taeniasis, trichinellosis, toxoplasmosis, and ascaris infection.
