An Experimental Investigation on a Non-prismatic Aluminium Composite Beam Using a Laser Vibrometer

Modal analysis of an aluminium composite material (ACM) beam is a major technique to obtain the dynamic behaviour of the beam. Measuring the natural frequency, mode forms, and damping capacity of the ACM beam is a slightly simple and accurate process. ACM has recently been used in the aircraft industry because of its lightweight and highly heat-resistant properties. ACM sheets, otherwise called sandwich material, comprise a thick layer of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) in the middle sandwiched between two thin aluminium layers. The modal analysis of a non-prismatic ACM beam under the free-free boundary condition is presented in the current paper. The LASER velocimeter is used to measure the ACM’s modal characteristics, while an impact hammer is used as the excitation source. By using Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT), excited signals are converted into frequency- and time-domains with the help of the MATLAB programme. The simulation is performed with COMSOL Multiphysics software version 5.6. The outcomes of the simulation have been compared with the experimental findings.
