An Investigation on the Characteristics and Properties of Bricks Composed of Red Mud
摘要
Red mud (RM), also known as bauxite residue, is a by-product generated during Bayer process that refines bauxite into alumina. As a solid waste material, red mud poses significant environmental challenges, especially in countries like India, which ranks among the top producers of this waste. The need to address the disposal issue of red mud has led to innovative approaches, including its application in various industries such as cement, glass, and brick production. One of the most promising applications of red mud is in the manufacturing of bricks. By incorporating red mud as a primary component, these bricks not only offer a sustainable construction material but also help mitigate the environmental impact of red mud disposal. This research emphasizes on the successful formation of bricks. Samples made from Bayer red mud were investigated to explore their composition, properties, and overall performance. The thermal behavior, morphological analysis, and phase analysis were conducted using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), FE-SEM, and XRD analysis, respectively. TEM was employed to investigate the internal structure of the red mud brick (RMB) samples. To assess mechanical performance, the compressive strength and hardness were evaluated using Differential Mechanical Analysis (DMA) and a Vickers micro-hardness tester. These red mud samples, produced through a specific process, have potential applications in the nuclear industry. The bricks may serve as sacrificial components, capable of absorbing corium and facilitating the transfer of heat from the corium to the red mud bricks.
