Experimental Investigations of Different Types of Soils by Blending of Geofibers

Strength is an important consideration in construction projects, and soil reinforcement is required when the native soil is insufficiently strong. This study investigates the way geofibers can improve soil strength and permeability. Experiments were carried out on two soil types, SP (Soil A) and CL (Soil B), using geofibers of 6 mm and 12 mm lengths blended in varied proportions (0.0–2.0% by weight). The soils collected at Sultanpur were tested for specific gravity (G), particle size distribution, optimum moisture content (OMC), maximum dry density (MDD), California bearing ratio (CBR), and permeability using standard laboratory techniques. The investigation found that the optimal CBR value for both SP and CL soils was attained with 1.5% 12 mm geofibers. This resulted in a CBR improvement of around 135% for SP soil and 147% for CL soil compared to untreated samples. Furthermore, as fiber content increased, permeability reduced, with the 12 mm fiber showing the most substantial reduction. A correlation study revealed a negative link between CBR and permeability in both soil types.
