The Indian government is actively promoting the installation of rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems on residential buildings. The rooftop systems use PV modules to convert sunlight into electricity, and these PV modules come in two varieties: opaque and bifacial PV modules. With these two types of PV modules, the objective of present study is to evaluate their electrical performance and recommend efficient and practical photovoltaic (PV) systems for residential buildings. The study focuses on a comparative analysis of the electrical performance of two systems. The investigation initially takes place in controlled indoor laboratory conditions, and then real-time data collection and assessment are conducted on actual residential PV systems located in Gwalior, India. Each of the PV systems under study has a 5 kWp rating, and the results reveal that the daily kWh electrical energy output of a 5 kWp rated bifacial PV system is 6% higher than that of a similar-rated opaque PV system.
