Sugar, jaggery and khandsari are major products of sugarcane in India. The unit operations involved in jaggery making are juice extraction, juice filtration, juice heating, boiling and concentration, juice clarification, jaggery moulding and packaging. Juice extraction and juice heating, boiling and concentration are major energy consuming activities. Juice is extracted by using sugarcane crushers, whereas juice heating, boiling and concentration are done over jaggery furnaces. Most of these furnaces are inefficient and made by local artisans. Therefore, there has always been a scope for energy conservation in these furnaces. The idea is to produce more jaggery per unit of energy. At ICAR-Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research, Lucknow, efficient 2-pan and 3-pan furnaces with special features have been developed. Many efforts have also been made to further improve efficiency of jaggery making furnaces by modifying juice pan and developing an efficiency boosting device (EBD). A waste heat recovery system (WHRS) has also been developed for recovery of waste heat going through flue gases for useful purposes.

Energy Conservation Techniques in Sugarcane Processing During Jaggery Making

Sugar, jaggery and khandsari are major products of sugarcane in India.
