In the light of climate change, single-use packaging greatly threatens our environment. Hence, the demand for sustainable packaging has escalated due to growing environmental concerns. The packaging formats in the milk category have undergone many transformations due to technological advancement, from reusable glass bottles to Tetra Pak cartons to plastic bottles (PET) to recycled plastic pouches and new innovative eco-friendly materials. The Indian consumers’ understanding and awareness towards the most sustainable packaging is still quite ambiguous. With the development of technology and the emergence of new materials, new alternatives have impacted the packaging industry. This research paper explores a comparative analysis of various packaging structures in the milk category from the consumer point of view. As milk is a daily essential for many, it provides us with a larger audience and wider options in packaging materials for the study. The methodology for this study is a mixed-method approach, combining qualitative as well as quantitative questions in an online survey (n = 86) to assess Indian consumers’ perceptions and preferences about different packaging materials, attitudes towards sustainability and disposal methods adopted. It investigates consumer’s understanding of life cycle assessment, disposal methods and environmental implications associated with different packaging materials such as reusable, recyclability, biodegradability and carbon footprint. Building on these learnings designers and policy makers can create more sustainable packaging options that would minimize environmental impact.

摘要
