The baking process is the final stage of producing pottery and ceramics—only after firing does clay turn into ceramic. A kiln is a structure within which clay wares can be fired under controlled heating conditions. However, with time, the primitive kiln has undergone many structural changes. The nature of the fuel used, and the design of the kiln have a direct effect on the quality of the wares being made. In India, potters traditionally bake their vessels using solid fuels like wood, coal, and cow dung. The use of solid fuels not only results in pollution but is also dangerous for the potters’ health and as well as the environment. During the surveys undertaken for this study, primary data were collected, and potters’ problems related to firing were observed and documented. These data were later analyzed, and based on that, a new and affordable cross-draft gas kiln with normal bricks and clay for local potters was designed. This study aims to adopt some of the best surviving practices for traditional pottery and then introduce certain design interventions as required in the clusters. One of the key outcomes of this work is the design and development of a low-cost kiln, which has a lower impact on environmental pollution and also ensures fewer health hazards for the potters.
