This research abstract introduces a pioneering Nature-based Solution (NBS) for air purification in semi-open and partially enclosed spaces. Inspired by nature and grounded in biophilic principles, this innovative system aims to enhance air quality, reduce stress, and promote well-being while incorporating visually appealing greenery. The first layer of filtration involves “Breathing Roots Technology,” inspired by the process of phytoremediation building upon the research findings from Clemens et al. (Clemens et al. in Trends Plant Sci 7:309–315 [1]), Gupta et al. (Gupta et al. in Environ Sci Pollut Res 20:2150–2161 [2]), and Wood et al. (Wood et al. in J Hortic Sci Biotechnol 77:120–129 [3]), which supports NASA’s findings on plants’ ability to clean pollutants; clubbed with the “Rain Shower Technology” to simulate natural rainfall, it effectively removes airborne pollutants and gaseous contaminants with minimal energy consumption. Strategic vent placement enhances airflow suction through an “Urban Tunnel Effect,” while approximately 80% of the system’s surface is adorned with plants for optimal visibility. The “Breathing Lounge” Project has been set up at IIT Ropar Guest House, demonstrating impressive results with an average 47% reduction in PM2.5 levels over 24 h compared to outdoor levels. Rapid urbanization has transformed cities, erased greenery, and created environmental issues. The envisioned aim is to reintroduce nature through our modular and dynamic living wall system that purifies the air and requires less power with a higher coverage area than traditional systems.
