The primary concern is the growing problem of plastic packaging waste (PPW), which necessitates a transition toward sustainable and eco-friendly packaging alternatives. The research investigates whether the adoption of environmentally friendly designs can influence consumer-purchasing behaviors and drive a shift toward more sustainable consumption patterns. A comprehensive life cycle analysis (LCA) is central to the study, evaluating the environmental impacts of various packaging options throughout their entire lifecycle—from production to disposal. By doing so, the study seeks to identify the most viable eco-friendly packaging solutions that minimize environmental harm. In addition to the LCA, the study conducts a contextual inquiry involving customers and stakeholders to gather insights into their perceptions and attitudes toward sustainable packaging. This qualitative approach helps understand the market's readiness to embrace biodegradable packaging and identifies potential barriers and facilitators to its adoption. The investigation advocates for practical and sustainable packaging solutions that are not only ecologically sound but also economically feasible. It specifically focuses on developing and implementing corn starch-based biodegradable packaging for potato chips. This alternative aims to significantly reduce PPW and promote sustainable design practices within the FMCG sector. By addressing both environmental and economic aspects, the study aims to demonstrate that sustainable packaging can be a viable alternative to traditional plastic packaging. The ultimate goal is to encourage the FMCG industry to adopt more sustainable practices, thereby contributing to a reduction in environmental pollution and fostering a culture of eco-friendly consumerism in the Ahmedabad region.
