Designing Physical Recreational Games for the Visually Impaired in India
摘要
India has a huge number of visually impaired youngsters studying at different places. Recreational activities play an important role even in the life of visually impaired persons. The paper develops an indoor recreational game namely slingshot showdown for visually impaired adults under 30 years of age considering their needs which are identified through a questionnaire and interview. This paper also explores the ways to make some of the existing games adaptable to the visually impaired like volleyball or innovating new physical recreational games for the visually impaired by using the available technology. The proposed study was done at a residential institute in Pune and MP Drishti Heen Kalyan Kendra with 30 boys enrolled in different courses. For developing slingshot showdown, research was conducted which involves finding out the interest of visually impaired students in sports and the facilities provided to them. The research gap shows that, some of the games like cricket and chess have already been made adaptable for them but still there is a need to provide them with other choices of games to choose from. The design process of the slingshot showdown involves various steps namely Discover, Define, Develop, and Deliver as mentioned in the double diamond method. Some of the potential game ideas are prototyped and tested in this work. The results show that instead of creating exclusive games for the visually impaired, one should make it Universal and to be played by all.
