Spatial Data Visualization for Landfill Land Suitability Analysis in Emerging Urban Areas—A Case of North Lakhimpur, Assam, India

Rapid and unplanned urbanization drives several environmental, social, and ecological issues in India. Inefficient municipal solid waste management, a major consequence of rapid and unplanned urbanization, remains a challenge in the country. One of the major challenges for efficient municipal solid waste management is the selection of appropriate landfill sites. Various guidelines have been passed by different organizations in India to discourage improper disposal of municipal solid waste and minimize the contamination of areas surrounding a landfill. Implementation of the guidelines, however, remains a challenge for the small urban areas, i.e., up to tier 2 cities (population < 1 lakh). This paper discusses the site selection process of a new landfill site using spatial data visualization for a tier 2 city in Assam. Analysis of the study includes the survey of current solid waste management practices, the quantity of municipal solid waste generated, the area required for a new landfill site, groundwater levels, sensitive zones, surface waterbodies, urban greens, accessibility to the new landfill site, and wind direction in the study site. Multiple criteria using a Geographical Information System (GIS) and the Central Public Health and Environmental Engineering Organization guidelines were adopted for spatial analysis. Spatial layers were generated using a combination of spatial data, visual buffers, GIS, and remote sensing (RS) to identify a suitable site for the new landfill in the study site. The study’s results help identify a potential landfill site by applying data visualization for Spatial analysis. A new location for landfill sites has been identified by applying the CPHEEO guidelines in the context of emerging urban areas. Results of the study also indicate a gap in the segregation of the MSW at the source.
