With the Ahmedabad Declaration of 1979, the designers in developing countries like India, resolved to integrate indigenous craftsmanship with technological advancements in their problem-solving process. Additionally, digital fabrication technologies gained momentum since the 2000s, especially with the Maker Movement that originated in the USA. This has led to a growing number of studies in the intersection of craft, design, and technology, across the world. The literature review of such papers revealed that although collaboration was a significant aspect, none had addressed a systematic method aimed at enhancing the efficiency of such co-creations. This paper presents a participatory project: the banana fiber craftspeople of Kerala co-creating with designers using 3D printing technology. Our preliminary field research showed a dwindling number of craftspeople in Kerala’s banana fiber craft clusters, juxtaposed with the rising popularity of makerspaces like the FabLab supported by the Kerala Startup Mission. Thus, the primary aim of this research was to identify factors that could enhance the efficiency of co-creation between the banana fiber craftspeople and the designers using 3D printing technology. The designers and craftspeople co-created in pairs, based on a shared design brief. Their participant experiences were gathered using a survey and qualitatively analyzed.
