Land Degradation Neutrality: Concept and Strategies

Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) is the concept that can be defined as the amount of land resources in a balanced state in an ecosystem. It is an important component of Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, notably addressed in Target 15.3 under the sustainable development goal (SDG 15), “Life on Land.” Land degradation continues to worsen globally due to climate change and anthropogenic activities, affecting over 3.2 billion people, and humans have already altered 70% of ice-free land. LDN seeks to reverse this trend by maintaining or improving the status of land resources to support ecosystems and promote food security. The major causes of land degradation are salinization, alkalization, acidification, pollution, nutrient depletion, reduction in total and biomass carbon, wind erosion, waterlogging, lowering of the water table, mining and quarrying, and decline in land biodiversity, which are further accelerated by climate change. Sustainable land management is the primary strategy for stopping, reducing, and reversing land degradation. Achieving LDN can lead to a healthier ecosystem, improved food security, and a more sustainable future. Furthermore, long-term development policies can address this by promoting efficiency, resilience, and social inclusion in the food, water, and energy sectors.
