Mental Health Rehabilitation Services After Release from Prison and the Risk of Reoffending in South Asia
摘要
This chapter examines the critical issue of mental health rehabilitation services for prisoner’s post-release in South Asia, a region grappling with overcrowding, outdated criminal justice systems, and a high prevalence of mental health disorders among inmates. The chapter illustrates the challenges faced by former prisoners with mental illness upon reintegration into society, including securing basic necessities, rebuilding social ties, and the heightened risk of recidivism. It analyzes the current state of prison mental health services across South Asian countries, highlighting the scarcity of resources and the need for comprehensive aftercare programs. It also highlights the complex relationship between mental illness and recidivism, discussing risk factors and the importance of tailored interventions. Finally, it reviews various psychosocial interventions, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, mindfulness techniques, Motivational Enhancement Therapy, and Expressive Art Therapies, that have demonstrated effectiveness in improving mental health outcomes and facilitating successful reintegration, emphasizing the need for a multi-stakeholder approach to address this pressing issue.
