There is an international focus to achieve climate neutrality which has highlighted the important role of green spaces in urban environments especially in an academic environment. This study investigates green spaces role in advancing climate neutrality goals through a qualitative case study conducted at a Nigerian university. The research explores how university green spaces can contribute to the carbon sequestration, reduction of urban heat islands, and improvement of biodiversity by the support of the university’s climate neutrality objectives. The collection of data was through in-depth interviews with the assistance of the university staff and students. There was also analysis in documentation and observations. The findings showed that green spaces are important for environmental sustainability and improving the wellbeing and academic staff and students. However, some challenges exist such as lack of maintenance, awareness, and poor funding poses serious challenges to the full implementation of these green spaces to contribute to climate goals. The study mentions that there is the need for strategic planning and management of green spaces so as to include them into broader institutional climate action plans. The practical implications of this study suggest that universities in developing countries can play an important role in climate neutrality efforts by the utilization of their green spaces. In addition, the study recommends provision for policy makers, management of universities and maybe urban planners that wish to improve the usefulness of green spaces to achieve sustainability targets. This study provides contribution to growing knowledge on the inclusion of green infrastructure and climate action with emphasis on the importance of green spaces toward internationally transition toward a sustainable future.
