The achievement of silencing the guns in Africa is a function of different factors such as proper framework, adequate funding etc. These factors all contribute their quota to ensuring the resolution of conflicts and the institution of peace across the continent. However, an often-forgotten contributive factor is the active participation of women to ensure a gendered response to conflict and silencing the guns. The number of women represented in peace support operations [PSOs] in Africa is less than 20%, additionally, most African countries contribute less women to their peace deployments. This continued underrepresentation of women in PSOs and peacebuilding broadly is a major obstacle to silencing the guns as there can be no peace when half of the population are not adequately represented in the process. It is imperative that we begin to consider how women’s inclusion in peace operations can enable us to better silence the guns in Africa. Hence, this chapter explores how the representation of women in PSOs can be a means towards silencing the guns in Africa. By employing a qualitative exploratory research design, this chapter argues for a gendered response to conflicts to ensure the actualization of silencing the guns. It recommends that there should be effort to develop a gendered approach for silencing the guns to engender sustainable and holistic peace in Africa.
