This chapter examines the challenges posed by globalization to the African Union’s (AU) Silencing the Guns (STG) Agenda, particularly in light of the extended deadline to 2030. The proceeds from the premise that while globalization presents opportunities for economic growth and development, it simultaneously exacerbates inequalities and instability within African states, often undermining local governance and social cohesion. The chapter argues that the interconnectedness fostered by globalization has led to a proliferation of external influences that complicate conflict dynamics in Africa. External actors, including foreign military presence and multinational corporations, contribute to the destabilization of fragile states, while neoliberal policies imposed by globalization further entrench disparities and fuel resentment that may result in persistent use of guns on the continent. Consequently, the STG agenda’s ambitious goal of achieving a conflict-free Africa by 2030 faces significant obstacles. To navigate these challenges, the chapter proposes several policy recommendations: reinforcing regional cooperation to enhance collective security; implementing stricter regulations on arms trade and foreign military engagement; fostering local capacities for conflict resolution, and promoting sustainable economic practices that prioritize the welfare of local communities. Addressing these multifaceted impacts of globalization may propel African states closer to realizing the STG aspirations.
