While researching the women visiting the imprisoned relative in Bijnor district jail, the author delves into the experiences and perceptions of women when navigating the complex process of “Milayi” or visitation within the prison system. This chapter highlights the disproportionate burden and expectations these women have to endure: the long waits and sacrifices that are particularly evident for women from remote villages and with children. The complex navigation of motherhood and family responsibilities highlights the nuanced emotional landscape they face as they manage relationships between jailed relatives, family, and themselves. Through the narratives shared by the participants, this study sheds light on the resilience these women showed, their reliance on faith as a source of support and strength, and the unexpected solidarity of the community dealing with shared struggles. This chapter utilizes group discussion as a method and tool to explore the multilayered challenges faced by women, advocating for more women-centric inclusive research and practice. It advocates for more academic and criminal justice social work research attention to families of prisoners and, more importantly, women to understand the impact of the criminal justice system.
