The unilateral biportal endoscopy (UBE) spine surgery technique for lumbar disc herniation was first reported by Dr. Daniel Julio De Antoni in 1994 [1]. However, it did not gain widespread popularity until 2010. The technique offers a similar approach to standard microscopic decompression and allows both ipsilateral and contralateral decompression under high magnification. Since it does not require specialized instruments, experienced spine surgeons and hospitals can adopt this technique relatively quickly. Technically, UBE is a percutaneous surgical technique performed under endoscopic visualization in a fluid medium, using two separate portals—one for the endoscope and the other for the working instruments. This allows for excellent visualization and surgical capability in posterior and posterolateral approaches to the spine. The field of view in this technique is significantly wider, and the useful viewing area is greater compared to other microscopic and full endoscopic spine surgery techniques [2, 3].
