The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) refers to a research and inquiry approach within higher education that focuses on studying teaching and learning processes to enhance educational practices and student outcomes. SoTL involves systematic investigation, reflection, and dissemination of findings related to teaching strategies, curriculum design, assessment methods, and other aspects of the teaching and learning environment. With SoTL, the goal is to improve teaching effectiveness and promote student learning through evidence-based practices. Unfortunately, many disciplinary engineering PhD programs, excluding Engineering Education, do not adequately prepare doctoral program graduates for effective teaching and dissemination of best teaching practices via SoTL. As we look to broaden participation in engineering, the limited scholarly training of disciplinary engineering educators causes a potential challenge for implementing effective pedagogical approaches critical for improving representation among underrepresented populations. The purpose of this book chapter is to provide readers with tools and strategies to implement innovative curriculum in the engineering classroom and share lessons learned via SoTL-focused journals and conference proceedings.
