South Africa has one of the world’s highest youth unemployment rates, with almost half of its youth population unemployed, as recorded in the final quarter of 2019. This study explores BRICS’ contribution to addressing youth unemployment in South Africa. In doing so, the chapter interrogates the importance of youth employment to peace, security and sustainable development in South Africa. Liberal institutionalism theory is used in this study to understand the relevance and contribution of coalitions like BRICS to increasing aid and cooperation among member states to address various socio-economic challenges related to youth unemployment. Data is collected from scholarly publications, national Quarterly Labour Surveys, BRICS Declarations, and the Department of Trade, Industry and Cooperation reports. The study concludes that while South African youth have benefited through investments in education, intra-BRICS exchange programmes, job creation, foreign investment, and increased trade relations, more needs to be done to address youth unemployment and ensure that the benefits of BRICS to South Africa are applied and seen on a larger scale nationally.
