Agroforestry: Improving Soil Health and Healthy Food Production

Agroforestry, by integrating trees with crops and livestock, enhances soil health, improves ecosystem functions, and helps as buffer against extreme weather events like droughts and floods. It boosts soil properties like water retention, nutrient cycling, and erosion resistance, leading to stable yields, increased biodiversity, and carbon sequestration. Wide adaptability of agroforestry makes it a versatile solution for diverse climates, promoting both environmental conservation and food security. However, research gaps, also in high-income countries, remain the bottleneck in valuing the socio-economic impacts of agroforestry. To fully realize its potential, large scale studies and standardized monitoring are needed, alongside stronger collaboration between governments, policymakers, and farmers. Agroforestry offers a powerful tool to address soil degradation, biodiversity loss, and food insecurity amid growing climate challenges.
