The view taken of information or information systems (IS) is strongly affected by language structures and perceptions of language. The Japanese word for language, “Kotoba”, literally means the English word “leaves” (or edge) of “actuality”. For the Japanese, language does not reflect the world, nor constitute it, but is the hint (or message) of “actuality”. The Japanese way of using IS is not for controlling the real world as an object, nor for supporting conversation networks between people, but for finding themselves in the situation as “actuality”. This is very similar to the notion of C-SSM, my reinterpretation of SSM. In this, SSM becomes a methodology to bridge between “actuality” and “reality”, mediated by its models. In this chapter, I will further explore these concepts of IS.
