The shift to a globalised city changed the semiotic values of Barcelona from the 1990s, with a more international perspective and planning priorities. These are evidenced in a series of urban renewal projects, including Santa Caterina market, Diagonal Mar, the Fòrum de les Cultures, 22@ district, and initiatives to make Barcelona more entrepreneurial in its governance. New ideas from academia influenced the form and reading of the city, such as innovation districts, the creative city, and the smart city. The dramatic growth in tourist visitors also had a major impact on the semiotic landscape, which was increasingly addressed to potential visitors to the city rather than its inhabitants.

摘要
