This chapter commences with an illustration of cervical fascia and neck spaces which are the location for different conditions causing acute neck swelling. The relevant history to be taken and examination findings are detailed to enable the elucidation of a clinical diagnosis. The importance of a thorough ENT examination including flexible nasopharyngolaryngoscopy is highlighted. The differential diagnosis to be considered in patients who present with acute neck swelling is also provided. Clinical photographs of common causes of acute neck swelling like Ludwig’s angina, acute thyroiditis, etc. have been provided. Radiographic images (including X-ray of the neck, lateral view, and contrast CT scan of the neck) with findings in different kinds of neck abscesses are shown. The medical management of common conditions causing acute neck swelling is described in detail. The sites of incision of the various neck abscesses that could be encountered are described. A video showing drainage of an acute submandibular abscess has been provided.
