This chapter covers common acute complications of routine otorhinolaryngological surgery. These include acute postoperative facial palsy, epistaxis, and vertigo. The chapter also covers postoperative complications like wound infection, post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage, and complications of tracheostomy. In each section, the history (including operative findings to be specifically noted) and detailed examination required is highlighted. The tests to be ordered on an urgent basis, particularly bacteriological swabs and imaging, are described. The indications for conservative management and urgent re-exploration are described. A stepwise management of each complication is described in detail. Intraoperative pictures of patients who underwent facial nerve decompression for iatrogenic trauma with postoperative facial palsy have been provided. This chapter has four videos to illustrate the various postoperative complications. These include one showing findings in a patient with postoperative epistaxis, another demonstrating the correct technique of nasal packing, and a third showing intraoperative management of anterior ethmoidal artery bleeding. A video of footplate mobilization during stapes surgery causing acute postoperative vertigo has also been provided.
