This chapter begins by defining the different types of stridor and the history to be taken in patients who present to the Emergency Department in acute stridor. Systematic examination of a patient in acute stridor is described next, and this has been illustrated with several clinical photographs. The differential diagnosis of stridor in children based on the age of the child has been tabulated for quick reference. The role of radiography in localizing the site of airway obstruction is described in detail and supplemented with several illustrative X-rays and CT scans. A flow chart detailing the management of stridor based on the severity has been provided. The indications for medical management of stridor with steroid therapy and intubation/tracheostomy are described in detail. Three videos illustrating different causes of stridor and their management have been provided for this chapter. They include the removal of a subglottic laryngeal foreign body by flexible laryngoscopy in a child, microdebrider-assisted excision of juvenile laryngeal papillomatosis in a child presenting with severe stridor and a third video showing the unusual finding of a subglottic mass in a patient with acute stridor.

摘要
