Migration and diaspora are the defining trends of World today. Diaspora engagement discourse is an important part of migration-development debate. Diaspora has been recognised as a new resource and an agent of change and development. Diaspora engagement has emerged as development-policy issue. Indian diaspora is one of the largest Diasporas in the world. Indian labour migrants in Fiji called ‘girmityas’ rooted to the British indenture labour system and Gujarati communities and free migrants thereafter, have contributed significantly to Fiji’s economy and society, and its socio-cultural development, making Fiji, a modern nation-state. The trans-nationalisation of Fiji Indian diaspora is a rapid process and call for greater diaspora engagement. The purpose of the paper is to bring out theoretical linkages between diaspora and development. It provides Fiji-Indian diasporic communities’ engagement in Fiji from historical and contemporary perspectives, focusing on the role of Fiji-Indian Diaspora in the development of Fiji. It also explores the extent of their engagement to the original homeland.
