Ethiopia and Role of Its Diaspora in Development
摘要
This chapter delves into how Ethiopians living abroad have contributed to the development of their homeland after 2002. It looks at how the Ethiopian government has reached out to its diaspora through evolving policies and dedicated institutions, aiming to tap into their skills, resources, and connections. The chapter explores the many ways the diaspora has supported national progress sending money home, investing in businesses, sharing knowledge, and advocating for Ethiopia on global platforms. At the same time, it doesn’t shy away from the challenges: political tensions, red tape, and a lingering sense of mistrust have sometimes held back deeper engagement. Despite these hurdles, Ethiopia has made meaningful progress in recognising and involving its diaspora. The chapter concludes by emphasising the need for long-term, inclusive strategies to fully unlock the diaspora’s potential in shaping the country’s future.
