Ecological Restoration Through Nature-Based Solutions and Minimizing Water Challenges

In light of growing urbanization and environmental deterioration, ecosystem restoration and urban sustainability have emerged as crucial goals. This chapter investigates how nature-based solutions (NbS) might improve urban circularity, mitigate water-related issues, and manage ecosystem degradation. NbS provide multipurpose strategies for climate resilience, biodiversity preservation, and resource efficiency by using natural processes. This chapter starts out by outlining the main obstacles to attaining urban circularity, such as pollution, water scarcity, and ineffective resource management. It emphasizes how NbS can be integrated into sustainable approaches to removing these obstacles, such as urban forestry, wetland restoration, and green infrastructure. Further evaluation of NbS’ contribution to ecosystem restoration highlights its capacity to restore ecosystem services such habitat formation, water purification, and carbon sequestration. In addition to addressing the issues of scalability, governance, and maintenance, this chapter discusses case studies of effective NbS installations that highlight the ecological, economic, and social advantages of this technology. This chapter also emphasizes how crucial it is to broaden the use of NbS in urban planning, make use of technology developments, and create appropriate legislative frameworks. This chapter is a call to action for adopting NbS as a fundamental component of sustainable urban development.
