Migratory sheep and goats in north-western Himalayan region are raised for meat, wool, and milk production. Factors adversely affecting animal health and performance are responsible for economic losses in animal production. Parasitic infections particularly those affecting gastrointestinal tract cause morbidity and mortality in farm animals and contribute substantially to the spread of zoonotic diseases. Thus, proper control and management of parasitic infections are crucial for sustainable and profitable sheep and goat production. The most common and efficacious approach to control parasitic infections is chemotherapy, but it has disadvantages such as development of drug resistance and chemical residues in the animal products. Management-related strategies include grazing management, biological control of parasites, and breeding for genetically resistant sheep and goats. Vaccination is likely to be part of integrated parasite management schemes. A gamma radiation-attenuated live parasite vaccine against Dictyocaulus filaria was developed in India. Helminth and protozoal vaccines currently available are those against Haemonchus contortus, Echinococcus granulosus, Taenia ovis, and Toxoplasma gondii. Vaccination of farm small ruminants against chronic and subclinical parasitic infections would be an effective, sustainable, and economical approach to control parasitic infections for improvement of animal health and production.
