Aerial Drones for Atmospheric Research: Capabilities, Challenges, and Future Prospects

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly essential in atmospheric research, offering advanced capabilities to measure critical variables like temperature, humidity, wind speed, and greenhouse gas concentrations. This review analyzes the technological advancements, challenges, and future prospects of UAVs in atmospheric data collection. Key findings highlight that while UAVs hold significant promise, challenges such as sensor accuracy during rapid vertical profiling, limited battery life, and flight endurance constrain their ability to gather continuous data over extended periods, especially at high altitudes. Furthermore, the large volumes of data collected pose challenges for real-time processing, requiring substantial computational resources. However, emerging technologies like AI-driven autonomous drones, quantum sensors, and self-healing materials offer promising solutions to these hurdles. This review contributes by offering a detailed analysis of current UAV capabilities and suggesting future research directions essential for developing next-generation UAVs capable of supporting real-time climate modelling and weather prediction.
